Happy Labor Day 🎙️✊
For one day each year, America celebrates “the American worker.” But what happens when those workers decide they want something more than a cookout?
This Labor Day, the numbers tell a fascinating story: Americans overwhelmingly support labor unions—and tens of millions of nonunion workers say they would join one if they could.
In this special Labor Day episode, we look at the growing disconnect between what workers want and what the American workplace allows them to have. And we have USC faculty and Wikipedia organizing, and 1,300 Encore Boston workers on strike.
The irony of Labor Day is that everybody loves “the American worker” right up until the American worker starts asking for more.
Workers don't appear to have lost faith in unions. Maybe they've simply discovered that collective power works.
And that might be the most important Labor Day story of all.
